About Bera Wetlands (Ramsar Site)

Bera Wetlands is Malaysia’s largest freshwater swamp forest, renowned for its rich biodiversity and traditional indigenous communities. It offers unique ecological experiences, including wildlife observation and cultural tourism.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Bera Wetlands, located in the state of Pahang on Peninsular Malaysia, is the country's largest freshwater swamp forest and one of the few remaining intact wetland ecosystems in Southeast Asia. Spanning approximately 260 square kilometers, this Ramsar-designated site encompasses peat swamps, freshwater lakes, and forested areas that support a remarkable variety of plant and animal species. The wetlands form a vital habitat for endangered wildlife, including Malayan tigers, Asian elephants, and the rare serow, as well as diverse bird species such as hornbills and the Malayan peacock-pheasant. The wetland’s ecology plays a critical role in water purification, flood control, and carbon storage.

Bera Wetlands is also home to the Semelai and other indigenous Orang Asli peoples, whose livelihoods are closely linked to the natural environment through traditional fishing, farming, and handicrafts. Visitors can explore the wetlands via guided boat tours, walking trails, and canoe trips while learning about the local culture and ecology. The area offers excellent birdwatching and wildlife viewing opportunities, especially during early mornings and evenings.

Conservation efforts focus on balancing human habitation and tourism with habitat protection, maintaining the integrity of this vital ecosystem. The landscape is characterized by extensive freshwater lakes, peat swamp forests, and riverine habitats. Outdoor recreation includes eco-tours, cultural visits, wildlife watching, and low-impact hiking. Facilities remain basic, enhancing the wilderness experience while preserving the area's natural and cultural heritage.
