About Bhoj Wetlands

Bhoj Wetlands comprise two major lakes near Bhopal, India, offering critical habitat for migratory birds and a vital urban ecosystem for recreation and biodiversity.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Bhoj Wetlands, located near the city of Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh, India, consist primarily of two artificial lakes: Upper Lake (Bada Talab) and Lower Lake (Chhota Talab). These reservoirs were originally constructed centuries ago to provide water to the region but have since become important ecological zones supporting diverse flora and fauna. The wetlands span an area of approximately 32 square kilometers and serve as a crucial habitat for over 200 species of birds including migratory species such as the bar-headed goose and common pochard. The lakes also support various fish species, amphibians, reptiles, and mammals, contributing to a rich ecological balance. Historically, the Upper Lake was created in the 11th century under the reign of Raja Bhoj, a prominent ruler of the Paramara dynasty, giving the site its name.

Today, Bhoj Wetlands attract birdwatchers, nature enthusiasts, and locals seeking recreation within the urban environment. Visitors can enjoy boating on the lakes, walking paths around their perimeters, and guided birdwatching tours. The wetlands also play a vital role in groundwater recharge, flood control, and climate regulation within the rapidly expanding city. Important landmarks include the Bhoj Wetland Interpretation Center and several vantage points around the lakes for photography and wildlife observation. The site is recognized internationally as a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance, underscoring its value for biodiversity conservation. Efforts are ongoing to maintain water quality and habitat health amid urban pressures, making Bhoj Wetlands a key site for environmental education and sustainable coexistence between nature and city life.
