Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Biotopo Cerro Cahuí is a 1,600-hectare protected area situated near the shores of Lake Petén Itzá in the Petén region of Guatemala. Established to preserve the unique biodiversity of the area, it features dense forests, rolling hills, and wetland environments. The biotope is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including howler monkeys, jaguars, and a multitude of bird species. It serves as an important habitat for local flora and fauna, some of which are rare or endangered. The park offers several hiking trails that take visitors through different ecosystems, providing picturesque views and opportunities for birdwatching. Its remote location and relatively low visitor numbers make it an ideal spot for those seeking solitude and a deeper connection with nature. Managed by the Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala, the biotope plays a crucial role in research and environmental education.
