About Black Hand Gorge State Nature Preserve

Black Hand Gorge State Nature Preserve in Ohio offers dramatic sandstone cliffs, a winding river gorge, and scenic hiking opportunities within the scenic Hocking Hills region.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Black Hand Gorge State Nature Preserve protects a rugged sandstone gorge carved by the Hocking River in central Ohio. The preserve is characterized by towering cliffs that rise as much as 200 feet above the river, showcasing exposed formations of Black Hand Sandstone, which date back over 300 million years. This geologic feature gives the area its name, and the steep, narrow gorge supports a mixed hardwood forest with species such as oak, maple, and hickory. The preserve is historically significant for the black hand petroglyph that was once etched into a cliff face by the prehistoric Newark people, which was unfortunately lost due to quarry activity in the 1800s. Visitors today can explore several miles of maintained trails following the river and passing by remnants of old stone mills and early railroad infrastructure that once operated here. The River trail provides graceful views of cascading rapids, rock shelters, and seasonal wildflowers. It is a popular destination for hiking, photography, birdwatching, and enjoying secluded natural scenery near urban centers. With limited facilities and a tranquil environment, Black Hand Gorge appeals to nature lovers seeking diverse terrain, striking vistas, and a peaceful riverside setting within Ohio’s predominant Appalachian foothills.
