Blue Lake Conservation Park protects the iconic Blue Lake and surrounding natural landscapes in South Australia’s Limestone Coast, offering striking natural beauty and diverse outdoor activities.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Blue Lake Conservation Park is located near the city of Mount Gambier in South Australia’s Limestone Coast region. The park features the famous Blue Lake, a volcanic maar lake known for its stunningly vibrant blue color that changes with the seasons. Geographically, the park is situated on ancient volcanic terrain formed over 30,000 years ago, with the maar lake itself having formed about 4,300 years ago. The lake is approximately 75 hectares in size and reaches depths of around 72 meters.

The park's ecosystem includes native eucalypt woodlands and wetland environments supporting a variety of birdlife, including waterbirds attracted by the lake. The surrounding forested area provides habitat for species such as the Southern Brown Bandicoot and various reptiles. Visitors come to appreciate the park's unique geology, scenic views, and the tranquil waters of the lake.

Recreational opportunities include walking trails that wind around the lake and through the woodlands, birdwatching spots, picnic areas, and interpretive signage that explains the volcanic origins and natural history of the area. The park also has points for photography with dramatic views of the lake’s vivid colors especially during late summer when the lake shifts from azure to a slate grey. The Blue Lake’s seasonal color change remains an enduring attraction.

Blue Lake Conservation Park has cultural significance to the Indigenous Bunganditj people, and there are efforts to protect sacred sites within the area. The site is managed to balance conservation with public access, maintaining the integrity of this natural landmark and its surrounds.
