About Caatinga National Park

Caatinga National Park preserves a unique semiarid ecosystem found only in northeastern Brazil, showcasing striking dryland landscapes and diverse endemic wildlife. It offers visitors a rare opportunity to explore the distinct flora and fauna of the Caatinga biome while enjoying hiking and wildlife viewing.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Caatinga National Park, located in the Brazilian states of Paraíba (PB) and Pernambuco (PE), protects a vast expanse of the Caatinga biome—an exclusively Brazilian semiarid region characterized by thorny shrubs, seasonal dry forests, and dramatic rocky outcrops. Established in 2001, the park covers an area of approximately 828,000 acres (335,000 hectares) and provides sanctuary for many endemic and threatened species adapted to the harsh, dry climate. The terrain ranges from rugged hills to open scrublands with sparse vegetation that changes dramatically between the dry season and the wetter months, showcasing remarkable biodiversity. Visitors to the park can experience hiking along several trails that traverse unique geological formations, including the Serra da Capivara and Serra da Meia Lua ranges. Wildlife enthusiasts often spot animals such as the Brazilian three-banded armadillo, Caatinga parakeet, and various reptiles and small mammals. The park is also culturally significant, lying near important archaeological sites with prehistoric rock paintings found in the Caatinga region. While infrastructure remains limited to preserve its fragile ecosystem, visitor centers near the park’s entrances provide maps and information. Outdoor recreation primarily includes day hiking, guided nature tours, and birdwatching, with options for primitive camping. Caatinga National Park ranks among the most important protected areas in Brazil for safeguarding the semiarid Caatinga biome, offering a singular landscape and ecological experience unlike the tropical rainforests more common in other parts of the country.
