About Caja de Muertos Natural Reserve

Caja de Muertos Natural Reserve is a pristine island reserve off the southern coast of Puerto Rico, famed for its crystal-clear waters, sandy beaches, and diverse marine and terrestrial ecosystems ideal for snorkeling, hiking, and wildlife observation.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Caja de Muertos Natural Reserve encompasses Caja de Muertos Island, a small uninhabited island approximately 8 miles south of Ponce, Puerto Rico. Covering a significant marine and terrestrial area, this reserve protects the island's unique coastal ecosystems, coral reefs, sea grass beds, and sandy beaches. The island's geography includes limestone cliffs, sandy coves, and the notable lighthouse that overlooks the Caribbean Sea. Ecologically, Caja de Muertos hosts specialized coastal vegetation, nesting sea turtles, and a variety of seabirds, making it an important habitat for conservation. Historically, the island was named 'Coffin Island' due to its shape. Today, the reserve allows visitors to explore through regulated eco-tourism activities such as hiking the trails to the lighthouse, swimming in pristine waters, snorkeling among vibrant reefs, and wildlife viewing. There are no on-island accommodations, so day trips from Ponce or nearby ports are common. The reserve's protected status helps preserve delicate marine life and natural landscapes. Its remote beaches, relatively untouched by development, provide a tranquil escape and an exceptional setting for photography and nature study. Caja de Muertos is a gem for visitors seeking both natural beauty and quiet solitude within a Caribbean island reserve setting.
