About Cayuga Lake Watershed

The Cayuga Lake Watershed encompasses the land and waterways draining into Cayuga Lake, offering diverse opportunities for hiking, fishing, boating, and wildlife observation within a rich ecological and cultural setting.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

The Cayuga Lake Watershed spans approximately 435 square miles in the Finger Lakes region of central New York. It includes the extensive drainage basin feeding Cayuga Lake, the longest of the Finger Lakes, which stretches about 38 miles north to south. The watershed comprises forested hills, farmland, wetlands, tributary streams, and small communities. It supports an array of wildlife, including migratory birds, fish species such as lake trout and bass, and diverse plant communities. Historically, the watershed has been the home of indigenous peoples, particularly the Cayuga Nation, part of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, and later European settlers who developed agriculture, mills, and communities around the lake. Outdoor recreation in the watershed is robust, fueled by the lake itself and surrounding uplands. Visitors enjoy boating, fishing, paddle sports, and swimming on Cayuga Lake as well as hiking and mountain biking on the glaciated hills and ridges. Notable natural landmarks include Taughannock Falls State Park with its 215-foot waterfall, one of the tallest east of the Rockies, and several state forests and nature preserves offering trails and wildlife habitat. The mix of rural landscapes, water access, and protected lands makes this watershed a prime destination for nature enthusiasts, photographers, and anglers. The region also benefits from environmental stewardship programs focused on protecting water quality and ecological health, enhancing its long-term recreational and conservation value.
