Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
The Chichester and Langstone Harbours Special Protection Area (SPA) is a designated coastal site located on the south coast of England, covering estuaries, intertidal mudflats, saltmarshes, and shingle beaches. These harbours represent some of the most important wetland habitats for birds in the UK and Europe, supporting large populations of overwintering and breeding waterfowl. The area's geography includes extensive tidal flats and lagoons that provide feeding and roosting grounds for internationally significant numbers of Brent geese, dark-bellied brent geese, waders, and other migratory species. The ecology of the SPA is shaped by the dynamic interplay between saltwater and freshwater influences, supporting eelgrass beds and diverse invertebrate communities that form the base of the local food web. Historically, these harbours have supported small traditional fishing communities and salt production, with many of the surrounding villages retaining their maritime character. Recreational activities in the area include birdwatching, sailing, kayaking, walking along coastal trails, and photography. The Solent Way National Trail skirts parts of the harbours, offering scenic views and access to nature reserves like Pilsey Island and Farlington Marshes. The SPA's tranquil environment and diversity of habitats attract nature enthusiasts year-round. Overall, Chichester and Langstone Harbours provide a crucial refuge for vulnerable bird species while inviting visitors to experience coastal wildlife and gentle outdoor pursuits.
