Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Chortiatis Forest Natural Reserve encompasses the slopes of Mount Chortiatis, located southeast of Thessaloniki in Central Macedonia, Greece. Covering a sprawling area of dense Mediterranean forest, the reserve preserves a habitat rich in biodiversity, including native oak, beech, pine trees, and characteristic undergrowth shrubs. The mountain's elevation reaches 1,201 meters, providing cooler microclimates and a refuge for numerous bird species, small mammals, and endemic flora. Historically, the forest and surrounding mountain served as a water catchment and supply source for Thessaloniki, housing springs and reservoirs critical to the city. Outdoor enthusiasts visit Chortiatis for its well-maintained network of hiking trails that traverse old logging roads and natural paths, offering panoramic views over Thessaloniki and the Thermaic Gulf. The area also holds cultural interest with small chapels and ruins scattered throughout. Due to its proximity to a major urban center, the forest reserve is a popular destination for day hikes, mountain biking, nature photography, and birdwatching. Visitors will find picnic areas at some access points, creating calm respites amid nature. The preserve plays an important role in local conservation efforts, safeguarding native ecosystems against urban expansion and fostering environmental education. The reserve’s combination of natural beauty, gentle outdoor activity options, and historical elements makes it a rewarding experience for visitors seeking an accessible outdoor setting near a metropolitan area.
