Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Coal Ridge Open Space is a 2,144-acre public natural area located just north of Glenwood Springs, Colorado. This open space features rolling foothills, grasslands, and riparian areas along the Colorado River, with elevations ranging approximately from 5,700 to 7,400 feet. Managed by the City of Glenwood Springs, it serves as a critical wildlife corridor supporting species like mule deer, elk, and various raptors. Historically, the land was part of ranching operations and has since been conserved to protect its natural character and recreational value. Visitors can explore over 14 miles of multi-use trails that accommodate hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders. Landscapes range from sweeping open vistas with wildflowers in spring and summer to dense stands of cottonwood and willow alongside the river. Popular trailheads include the Butler-Hancock Trail and the Horseshoe Bend Overlook, which offers panoramic views of the surrounding valley and river bends. The area is also valued for birding and nature photography, especially during migration seasons. Proximity to Glenwood Springs and easy accessibility from Highway 82 makes Coal Ridge Open Space a favored destination for day-use recreation, wildlife observation, and connecting with Colorado’s high-country prairie ecosystems.
