About Croagh Patrick Mountain

Croagh Patrick is a revered mountain pilgrimage site in County Mayo, Ireland, famed for its challenging hiking trail, striking views, and rich religious heritage attracting thousands of visitors annually.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Rising to an elevation of 764 meters (2,507 feet), Croagh Patrick is Ireland’s holiest mountain and a prominent feature of the Mayo landscape. Located near the town of Westport on the west coast of Ireland, the mountain dominates Clew Bay with its rugged granite slopes and offers panoramic views of the surrounding Atlantic coastline, islands, and peat boglands. Known as 'The Reek,' it holds deep spiritual significance dating back over 1,500 years; it is associated with Saint Patrick, who is said to have fasted on the summit for 40 days in the 5th century. This sacred status makes Croagh Patrick one of Ireland’s most important pilgrimage destinations, especially on Reek Sunday each July when thousands ascend barefoot in devotion.

Ecologically, the mountain supports heathlands, blanket bogs, and upland grasslands that host a variety of native flora and fauna, including heather, bilberry, and bird species such as meadow pipits. The climbing experience is a strenuous 4–5 hour round trip along steep, rocky, and sometimes slippery trails, demanding sure-footedness and caution. The trail begins at the base near the small village of Murrisk and gains approximately 700 meters of elevation.

In addition to spiritual visitors, outdoor enthusiasts are drawn to Croagh Patrick for its scenic hiking, photography opportunities, and cultural significance. At the summit lies a chapel dedicated to Saint Patrick, as well as a large cairn and crosses left by pilgrims. The site remains free to access, though parking can be limited on major pilgrimage days. The combination of natural beauty, historical importance, and the physical challenge of the climb makes Croagh Patrick a unique outdoor destination.
