About Duffins Creek Marsh

Duffins Creek Marsh is a vital wetland ecosystem near the Greater Toronto Area, offering diverse habitats for wildlife and opportunities for birdwatching and nature exploration.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Duffins Creek Marsh is located along the Duffins Creek watershed in the Regional Municipality of Durham, east of Toronto, Ontario. This marsh is one of the largest freshwater coastal wetlands on the north shore of Lake Ontario, where the Duffins Creek flows into the lake. It encompasses a mix of habitats including marshes, ponds, open water, and riparian forests, which support a broad range of plant and animal species, many of which are rare or provincially significant. The area plays a critical role in water purification, flood control, and as a breeding ground for fish and amphibians. Historically, the marsh and surrounding lands were used by First Nations peoples and later by European settlers engaged in agriculture and small-scale industry. Today, large portions of Duffins Creek Marsh are protected under municipal and provincial conservation initiatives, aimed at preserving its ecological integrity amidst urban pressures. Visitors come to experience peaceful walks along boardwalks and trails, wildlife viewing particularly of migratory birds, and educational programs about wetland ecology. The marsh supports spawning for fish species such as bass and perch, and is a stopover for waterfowl during migration seasons. Its proximity to urban centers makes it an important natural refuge and outdoor escape for local residents and tourists interested in low-impact hiking, photography, and environmental education.
