About Elberta Dunes Preserve

Elberta Dunes Preserve is a unique coastal dune system located on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan, offering expansive sandy landscapes, diverse plant species, and tranquil outdoor experiences.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Elberta Dunes Preserve is situated just north of the village of Elberta, Michigan, along the eastern shoreline of Lake Michigan. This preserve protects one of the few remaining large dune complexes in the region, featuring rolling sand dunes, interdunal wetlands, and a mixture of hardwood and conifer forests. The ecological importance of the preserve lies in its role as habitat for numerous rare and native plant species adapted to sandy, well-drained soils, as well as migratory birds that use the area for nesting and stopover. Historically, this area was shaped by glacial activity and shifting lake levels, creating the broad dune formations visible today. Visitors to Elberta Dunes Preserve enjoy hiking through the soft sands under towering dune grasses and wildflowers, birdwatching for species like the piping plover and various warblers, and beachcombing along the Lake Michigan shoreline. The preserve is managed primarily for conservation, with limited development to maintain the natural conditions. Trails meander through the dunes and wetlands, offering quiet moments away from urban life and opportunities to observe the dynamic interaction between land and lake. Fishing and paddle sports are popular on nearby Lake Michigan, while photographic opportunities abound with dunes contrasting against blue waters and expansive skies. The preserve appeals particularly to nature lovers, photographers, and those seeking solitude in a lightly visited coastal environment. Seasonal changes bring shifting colors and textures, making the preserve a rewarding destination year-round.
