About Entebbe Wildlife Sanctuary

Entebbe Wildlife Sanctuary is a vital protected area located near Lake Victoria, offering visitors a chance to experience rich biodiversity, including numerous bird species and diverse savanna habitats.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Entebbe Wildlife Sanctuary spans an area of approximately 51 square kilometers in Uganda's Central Region, close to the shores of Lake Victoria. This sanctuary provides crucial habitat for a wide range of wildlife, particularly for birds and small to medium-sized mammals. It presents an important green space near the urban center of Entebbe and serves as a refuge for species threatened by habitat loss elsewhere. The landscape features a mix of open savanna, wetlands, woodland patches, and lakeshore environments supporting a diverse ecology. The sanctuary plays a significant role in the conservation of Uganda's natural heritage and biodiversity.

Historically, the area was established to protect bird populations and has grown to become one of the primary locations for bird watching in the country. It is home to over 200 bird species including the African Grey Parrot, a species currently under threat from illegal wildlife trade. Visitors to Entebbe Wildlife Sanctuary can explore several walking trails that offer close encounters with wildlife. The sanctuary also supports populations of primates such as red-tailed monkeys and vervet monkeys, as well as various reptiles and amphibians.

Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy guided nature walks, bird watching excursions, and educational tours provided by local conservation groups. The sanctuary’s proximity to Entebbe International Airport enhances its accessibility, making it a frequently visited site for eco-tourists, researchers, and local families. While camping is not widely developed within the sanctuary, day visits are highly recommended for nature appreciation and wildlife photography, especially around early morning and late afternoon when wildlife activity is at its peak.
