About Farlington Marshes

Farlington Marshes is a coastal nature reserve in Hampshire, England, renowned for its extensive saltmarsh habitats and diverse bird populations, offering excellent opportunities for birdwatching and nature walks.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Farlington Marshes is located on the eastern edge of Portsmouth, Hampshire, and spans an area of coastal saltmarsh, mudflats, and intertidal lagoons along the north shore of Langstone Harbour. It is managed by the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust as a vital wildlife conservation site. The marshes are an internationally important Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) due to their saltmarsh habitats, which support a rich diversity of salt-tolerant flora and fauna. The area is particularly famous for its extensive populations of migratory and overwintering waders and wildfowl such as avocets, ringed plovers, shelduck, and teal. Visitors can access well-maintained footpaths and hides to observe wildlife with limited disturbance. The reserve also includes areas of reedbeds and scrapes which have been created to provide further habitat for breeding and feeding birds. Historically, Farlington Marshes was reclaimed farmland before being restored to tidal saltmarsh to benefit wildlife. Its proximity to Portsmouth and easy accessibility make it a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts, nature photographers, and ornithologists. While the terrain is fairly flat and accessible, the site offers a tranquil escape from urban settings and a chance to see hundreds of bird species depending on the season. Educational boards and guided walks are occasionally offered, enhancing the visitor experience. The site’s ecological importance combined with its recreational value highlight Farlington Marshes as a key protected place in southern England’s coastal network.
