Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Fertő-Hanság National Park was established in 1991, encompassing the Hungarian section of Lake Neusiedl and the adjoining Hanság area. The park features a combination of open water, marshes, and unique alkali lakes, providing critical habitats for numerous bird species, with over 340 recorded to date. The area has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2001, celebrated for its cultural landscape shaped by centuries of symbiosis between human and nature. Visitors can explore the mosaic of different ecosystems, from reed beds and meadows to woodlands, each harboring distinct plants and wildlife. The park offers various recreational activities including birdwatching, hiking, and cycling, along with guided tours and educational programs that delve into its ecological significance. Among its highlights are the expansive reedbeds, which form one of Europe's most important bird habitats. Fertő-Hanság is also steeped in history, with archaeological sites dating back to Roman times and traditional villages that reflect the cultural heritage of the region.
