Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Flathead Lake is situated in northwestern Montana and spans roughly 30 miles long and 15 miles wide. The lake boasts some of the clearest water in the world, thanks in part to limited nutrient pollution and its relatively small watershed. The area surrounding the lake is rich in diverse ecosystems, from the Rocky Mountain foothills to lush forests hosting varied wildlife including bald eagles, deer, and occasionally grizzly bears. Flathead Lake's history includes centuries of Flathead and Kootenai tribes' habitation; it's also a popular recreation spot for sailing, fishing, and kayaking due to its expansive and inviting waters. Visitors flock here for the stunning scenery, which includes views of the Mission and Swan Mountains. The lake's shoreline is dotted with numerous state parks, offering camping and picnicking facilities, making it a beloved destination for families and outdoor enthusiasts.
