About Foley Wildlife Area

Foley Wildlife Area is a state-managed natural area in Wisconsin offering diverse habitats for wildlife viewing, hunting, fishing, and hiking across wetlands, forests, and grasslands.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Foley Wildlife Area is located in Vilas County, northern Wisconsin, spanning over 12,400 acres of wetlands, forests, and brushlands. The area is managed by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and serves primarily as critical habitat for waterfowl and other wildlife species, particularly during migration seasons. The landscape includes a mix of hardwood forests, conifer swamps, lakes, and marshes, supporting a broad range of plant and animal life. This wildlife area is recognized for its excellent opportunities for hunting, particularly waterfowl, as well as for hiking, birdwatching, and cross-country skiing in winter. Historic uses of this land include timber production and drainage for agriculture, but management efforts have restored much of its natural wetland environment. Visitors are attracted to Foley Wildlife Area for its peaceful natural setting and abundance of wildlife, including deer, black bears, ruffed grouse, and numerous waterfowl species. The area features multiple trails and access points for fishing and water-based recreation. Fishing opportunities include northern pike, largemouth bass, and panfish in the various lakes and ponds. The terrain is relatively flat, making it accessible for visitors seeking moderate outdoor activities. Wildlife observers in particular appreciate the chance to see migratory birds during spring and fall. The area provides a prime example of northern Wisconsin’s wetland ecosystems and remains a tranquil destination for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts.
