About Francis Beidler Forest

Francis Beidler Forest is a pristine old-growth cypress-tupelo swamp in South Carolina renowned for its biodiversity and scenic boardwalk trails that immerse visitors in a rare wetland ecosystem.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Francis Beidler Forest, located near Harleyville, South Carolina, is a 18,000-acre nature preserve dedicated to protecting one of the oldest and best examples of old-growth bald cypress and water tupelo swamp forest in the world. The forest lies within the ACE Basin, a large and ecologically significant estuarine conservation area formed by the Ashepoo, Combahee, and Edisto Rivers. Established in 1969 through The Nature Conservancy, the preserve preserves an ancient wetland environment shaped by slow-moving blackwater streams and swampy hydrology. The towering bald cypress trees here are among the tallest and oldest in the region, some exceeding 1,000 years of age. This unique habitat supports rich biodiversity, including numerous bird species such as wood ducks, herons, and owls, along with alligators, river otters, and rare plants. Visitors explore the forest primarily via a 1.75-mile elevated boardwalk trail, which winds through cypress knees, dense mosses, and reflective waters allowing close wildlife viewing without disturbing the environment. The forest also offers guided tours, photography opportunities, and educational programming focused on wetland ecology and conservation. Francis Beidler Forest serves as a remarkable outdoor destination for nature lovers, bird watchers, and photographers seeking an intimate experience with one of the Southeast’s most intact freshwater swamp ecosystems. Its accessibility, ecological significance, and tranquil setting make it a cherished natural area for both casual visitors and researchers.
