About Freshkills Park

Freshkills Park is a vast public park on Staten Island, New York City, transforming a former landfill into one of the world’s largest sustainable parks, offering diverse outdoor recreation and ecological restoration.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Located on Staten Island’s western shore, Freshkills Park spans over 2,200 acres and is being developed on the site of what was once the world’s largest landfill. The park project began in 2001 with the goal of converting this massive landfill into a multifunctional green space that emphasizes sustainability, wildlife habitat restoration, and community recreation. The park stretches along 3.5 miles of waterfront on the Kill Van Kull and Arthur Kill waterways, providing scenic views and waterfront access to visitors. Its geography features hills formed from landfill mounds, wetlands, grasslands, and forested areas restored to support native flora and fauna. Ecologically, Freshkills Park is one of New York City's most ambitious reclamation efforts, fostering habitats for migrating birds, deer, foxes, and other wildlife. Key recreational opportunities include multi-use trails for hiking, running, cycling, and horseback riding. Additionally, the park offers fishing piers and kayak launch points along the waterfront. Notable landmarks include the iconic landfill mounds like East Mound, intended for recreation and panoramic viewing. Visitors appreciate the park's unique blend of urban access and expansive open space, with educational programs and community events held frequently. As development continues, Freshkills Park is expected to become a premier green space for both environmental conservation and outdoor enjoyment within the city.
