Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Gilsland Farm Preserve is a 135-acre conservation area dedicated to protecting the natural environment along the South River and surrounding upland. Located in Groton, Massachusetts, this preserve contains a mix of forested hills, wetlands, meadows, and riparian zones that support a wide diversity of wildlife and plant species. The preserve is historically significant, formerly part of a working farm dating back to the 18th century, and is now managed by the Groton Conservation Trust. Visitors can explore a network of well-maintained trails that offer access to the riverbanks, scenic overlooks, and peaceful forest settings. The terrain includes rolling hills offering moderate hiking opportunities as well as easy walks for families. The preserve's aquatic habitats provide excellent locations for fishing, bird watching, and observing amphibians. Wildlife commonly seen here include white-tailed deer, beavers, great blue herons, and a variety of songbirds. In addition to recreation, Gilsland Farm Preserve serves as an important educational resource with interpretive signage and occasional guided nature programs hosted by conservation groups. It is a popular destination to experience Massachusetts’ natural heritage close to urban areas while still escaping into quiet landscapes. The preserve remains open year-round, with winter activities such as snowshoeing and cross-country skiing encouraged during colder months.
