Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Golfo Nuevo Marine Protected Area is situated in the southwestern Atlantic Ocean along the coast of the Chubut Province in Argentine Patagonia. This marine protected area encompasses portions of Golfo Nuevo, a large bay known for its calm, nutrient-rich waters, which provide critical habitat for diverse marine species. Notably, the region is famous for its seasonal presence of southern right whales, which migrate here annually between May and December for breeding and calving. Ecologically, the MPA supports a range of habitats including kelp forests, sandy bottoms, and rocky reefs, which sustain populations of fish, marine mammals, seabirds, and invertebrates. Historically, the gulf has been important for indigenous groups and early settlers, eventually becoming a focus of conservation efforts to preserve marine fauna and promote sustainable fisheries. Recreationally, the protected area offers outstanding opportunities for wildlife viewing, particularly whale watching boat tours, snorkeling, and sport fishing, as well as coastal hiking and photography. Popular visitor towns like Puerto Madryn provide excellent access and visitor services. The MPA's blend of rich marine ecosystems and cultural heritage attracts eco-tourists and scientists alike, reinforcing its significance as a marine biodiversity hotspot in Argentina.
