About Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes Preserve

The Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes Preserve is one of California’s largest coastal dune systems, offering expansive sandy landscapes, diverse habitats, and a unique spot for hiking, wildlife viewing, and beach access along the Central Coast.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Spanning approximately 18 miles along the southern San Luis Obispo County coast into northern Santa Barbara County, the Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes Preserve encompasses over 24,000 acres of coastal dunes, wetlands, and marine environments. This preserve is recognized as one of the largest intact coastal dune systems in the western United States, featuring towering sand dunes shaped by wind and ocean currents. The terrain alternates between vast sandy landscapes, coastal scrub, and marshy wetlands, supporting a variety of plant and animal species, including some endangered and rare ones like the western snowy plover and the California tiger salamander.

Historically, these dunes have significant cultural importance, as they were once inhabited and utilized by Native American Chumash and Salinan peoples. European settlement and cattle grazing altered parts of the landscape, but conservation efforts beginning in the 20th century have successfully preserved much of the area’s natural character. Today, the preserve is managed primarily for habitat restoration and public recreation.

Visitors can explore an extensive network of trails that wind through dune ridges, coastal bluffs, and marshes. Popular activities include hiking, bird watching, photography, and horseback riding. The preserve also offers access to remote beach areas with views of the Pacific Ocean. Notable nearby landmarks include Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area, where motorized vehicle use is allowed separate from the preservation zones. The preserve appeals to naturalists and outdoor enthusiasts interested in coastal ecosystems, scenic views, and peaceful solitude away from more developed coastal areas.
