Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Higgins Lake Natural Area is a 90-acre protected tract located on the eastern shore of Higgins Lake in Roscommon County, Michigan. Managed by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, this natural area showcases a diverse northern hardwood forest with old-growth characteristics alongside the crystal-clear waters of Higgins Lake, one of the deepest inland lakes in Michigan. The area's ecological importance stems from its undisturbed condition, supporting a varied mix of flora including white pines, hemlocks, sugar maples, and aspens, as well as fauna such as black bears, white-tailed deer, and a variety of migratory bird species. Historically, Higgins Lake has been a popular recreation destination since the early 20th century, but the natural area itself remains undeveloped, preserving the land largely free from human impact. Visitors appreciate the natural tranquility for hiking on the short trail system that threads through the forested landscape to the lake shore. The proximity to the lake also offers opportunities for fishing, swimming, and paddling. Wildlife watchers and photographers find this place ideal for observing woodland creatures and birdlife in a quiet, relatively untouched setting. The natural area's compact size makes it a convenient stop for visitors exploring the larger Higgins Lake region and its surrounding state forests and recreational facilities.
