Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
The Horná Orava Protected Landscape Area (CHKO Horná Orava) is located in the northern part of Slovakia, within the Žilina Region, covering a diverse blend of mountainous terrain, river valleys, and cultural landscapes. Established in 1979, it aims to preserve the natural and cultural heritage of the Orava Basin, including the upper stretches of the Orava River. The region is known for its rolling hills, mixed forests of beech, fir, and spruce, and a rich variety of flora and fauna. The area supports wildlife such as lynx, deer, wild boar, and several species of birds including the black stork and golden eagle. Historically, the region is dotted with traditional Slovak villages and historic wooden architecture, reflecting a deep connection with the natural surroundings. Visitors can explore hiking and cycling trails passing through scenic valleys, along rivers, and to viewpoints offering expansive panoramas of the Carpathian Mountains. The protected area also includes parts of the Orava reservoir, providing opportunities for fishing, boating, and birdwatching. Winter activities include cross-country skiing and snowshoeing during colder months. Key landmarks within or near the area include the Orava Castle, which is a significant cultural monument, and the traditional village of Zuberec. Horná Orava is well-suited for visitors seeking moderate outdoor adventures combined with cultural insights in a serene natural setting.
