About Inishowen Head SAC

Inishowen Head SAC is a coastal Special Area of Conservation renowned for its rugged cliffs, diverse coastal habitats, and rich wildlife, offering excellent opportunities for wildlife watching and scenic exploration.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Inishowen Head SAC is situated on the easternmost point of the Inishowen Peninsula, County Donegal, Northern Ireland. This special conservation area encompasses dramatic sea cliffs, coastal grasslands, and rocky shores that support a wide array of habitats and species protected under the EU Habitats Directive. The site is characterized by its limestone cliffs facing the North Channel and Atlantic Ocean, creating diverse microhabitats for flora and fauna. Noteworthy ecological features include important seabird colonies, marine habitats supporting cold-water corals and sponges, and coastal heathlands with rare coastal plants. The area is also vital for migratory birds and offers important nesting sites for species such as kittiwakes and guillemots. Beyond its ecological significance, the headland provides stunning scenic views stretching across Lough Foyle and the surrounding coastal landscape, making it a popular spot for birdwatching, photography, and walking. Historic elements, including remnants of old fishing communities and defensive structures along the coast, add cultural interest. Visitors are drawn here for its blend of rugged natural beauty and biodiversity, with accessible trails weaving along the cliffs and coastal paths offering both challenging walks and relaxed nature outings. Protection and management focus on preserving delicate habitats from erosion, invasive species, and human disturbance while promoting low-impact recreation to maintain the site’s ecological integrity.
