Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Karkaraly National Park, established in 1998, is located in the Karagandy Region of Kazakhstan and covers an area of roughly 112,120 hectares. The park is dominated by the Karkaraly mountain range, featuring granite formations, crystal-clear lakes, and a mosaic of forests, meadows, and steppes. Its topography ranges from rolling foothills to rugged peaks, with the highest summit, Zhartas, rising to approximately 1,497 meters. The park's diverse ecosystems provide habitats for rare and endemic species such as the argali mountain sheep, bezoar goats, lynx, and more than 300 species of vertebrates, including many bird species. The flora is notable for its variety of steppe and forest plants, including medicinal herbs and protected species. Historically, the area has archaeological significance with ancient rock petroglyphs and remnants of early human settlements dating back thousands of years. Visitors to Karkaraly National Park can enjoy a variety of recreational activities including hiking through scenic trails like the Zhartas peak ascent, horseback riding across the steppe, fishing in pristine lakes, and cultural exploration of historical monuments. The park's combination of natural beauty and cultural heritage makes it a compelling destination for nature lovers, adventurers, and those interested in Central Asian history. Well-maintained campsites and guided tour options support longer stays, while the relative remoteness ensures a tranquil and immersive outdoor experience.
