About Keoladeo National Park

Keoladeo National Park is a renowned bird sanctuary near Bharatpur, Rajasthan, known for its rich avian biodiversity and seasonal wetlands that attract migratory birds from across Asia.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Keoladeo National Park, located in the Bharatpur district of Rajasthan, India, covers 29 square kilometers of former hunting grounds transformed into a protected avifaunal reserve. The park's geography consists primarily of seasonal wetlands, marshes, grasslands, and woodland areas, which provide an ideal habitat for over 370 species of birds, including many migratory species such as Siberian cranes during the winter months. Historically, the area was a royal hunting preserve for Maharajas of Bharatpur before being established as a bird sanctuary in 1956 and later declared a national park in 1982. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognized for its international bird migration importance and conservation efforts. Visitors to Keoladeo National Park can enjoy guided nature walks, birdwatching tours, and cycling routes on park-approved bicycles, allowing close observation of the diverse waterfowl, waders, and other wildlife such as deer and wild boar. The park is crisscrossed by a series of dikes and shallow pools that are carefully managed to maintain water levels essential for sustaining the wetland ecosystems. Notable landmarks include the historic Keoladeo Temple, from which the park derives its name. The best time to visit is during the cooler months from October to March when migratory birds are present and weather conditions are favorable. Keoladeo National Park remains a critical conservation site protecting wetland habitats amid increasing development pressures in Rajasthan, attracting naturalists, photographers, and eco-tourists worldwide.
