About Khao Kheow Open Zoo

Khao Kheow Open Zoo combines natural forest and animal habitats over a large area in Chonburi Province, offering an immersive wildlife experience focused on conservation and education.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Khao Kheow Open Zoo, located approximately 100 kilometers southeast of Bangkok in Chonburi Province, Thailand, spans over 8,000 acres of natural tropical forest, hills, and open landscapes. Established in 1978, the zoo was created to provide a naturalistic habitat for a wide variety of animals, promoting wildlife conservation, education, and public awareness. The zoo features over 8,000 animals from more than 300 species, including rare and endangered wildlife from Thailand and around the world.

The geography of the area includes dense tropical forest, streams, and open plains that mimic the animals' native environments. The zoo's layout encourages visitors to explore on foot, by car, or via tram tours to experience different animal zones, such as African Savannah, Tropical Rainforest, and The Cat Complex where big cats like tigers and lions reside. Key recreation opportunities include animal feeding, interactive exhibits, behind-the-scenes tours, and educational programs. Additionally, the zoo has a nocturnal house, aviaries, and an aquarium.

Visitors appreciate the balance of immersive wildlife viewing with environmental awareness. The zoo places strong emphasis on rescuing and rehabilitating animals and fosters breeding programs for endangered species. Notable landmarks include the African Savannah complex, the walk-through aviary, and the Animal Amphitheater where daily shows take place. The extensive green space and natural settings make it a relaxing outdoor experience for families, researchers, and wildlife enthusiasts.
