Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Kinabalu Park, established in 1964 in the Malaysian state of Sabah on the island of Borneo, spans approximately 754 square kilometers of forested mountain slopes and alpine meadow. The park is dominated by Mount Kinabalu, rising 4,095 meters (13,435 feet) above sea level, making it the tallest peak between the Himalayas and New Guinea. This elevation gradient creates diverse habitats ranging from tropical lowland forest to alpine soils, supporting over 5,000 plant species and a rich array of wildlife including the rare orangutan, Bornean gibbon, and various endemic orchids and rhododendrons.
