Koester Nature Preserve is a large protected area located near St. Joseph, Missouri, managed by the Missouri Department of Conservation. The preserve occupies 495 acres and features a range of ecosystems, including tallgrass prairies, hardwood forests, and upland glades. The property provides a habitat for various native species such as white-tailed deer, wild turkey, numerous songbirds, and butterflies. Historically, the land was acquired in the 1970s to conserve local native prairie and woodlands that are becoming rare in the region. Visitors to Koester Nature Preserve enjoy over 8 miles of well-maintained hiking trails that traverse diverse landscapes, offering excellent opportunities for birding, nature study, and photography. The preserve also serves as an outdoor classroom for environmental education. Its gentle rolling hills and open prairie views create a pleasant setting for walking and wildlife observation. There are no developed campgrounds within the preserve, so day use is encouraged. Accessibility is good with parking available at several trailheads.
