Koviljsko-Petrovaradinski Rit is a vast wetland nature reserve in northern Serbia renowned for its rich biodiversity, especially birdlife, and offers excellent opportunities for wildlife observation and tranquil nature walks.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Located in the Pannonian Plain along the left bank of the Danube River near the city of Novi Sad, the Koviljsko-Petrovaradinski Rit Nature Reserve covers a mosaic of wetlands, marshes, ponds, and floodplain forests. This protected area preserves a unique floodplain ecosystem characterized by numerous channels, canals, and oxbow lakes created by Danube's dynamic hydrology. The reserve sustains an exceptionally diverse flora and fauna, hosting over 260 bird species, making it one of the most important bird habitats in Serbia and a key site on migratory routes. It is especially favored for observing species such as the white-tailed eagle, great egret, pygmy cormorant, and heron species. The natural reed beds and wet meadows provide shelter for amphibians, fish, and mammals including otters and wild boars. Historically, the area was used for fishing, reed harvesting, and traditional agriculture, shaping the landscape and cultural heritage. Today, it attracts naturalists, bird watchers, photographers, and eco-tourists interested in exploring quiet trails and water routes; some sections can be accessed by boat or kayak.
