About Laguna Chicabal Nature Reserve

Laguna Chicabal Nature Reserve is a sacred volcanic crater lake known for its cultural significance and rich biodiversity, offering visitors a unique mix of spiritual and ecological experiences.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Laguna Chicabal Nature Reserve is located within the volcanic caldera of Santa Maria Volcano in Guatemala’s Western Highlands, near the town of San Marcos Palajunoj. The reserve centers around Laguna Chicabal, a crater lake situated approximately 2,712 meters (8,900 feet) above sea level. The lake holds great spiritual importance for the local Mam Maya communities, who regard it as a sacred site and conduct traditional ceremonies along its shores. The nature reserve supports dense cloud forests, home to diverse plant species including mosses, orchids, and native pines. Wildlife includes various bird species such as toucans and quetzals, as well as small mammals adapted to the montane environment. Access to Laguna Chicabal offers visitors opportunities for moderate hiking through lush forest trails, cultural immersion by observing or learning about Mayan rituals, and bird watching. The reserve has a peaceful atmosphere marked by mist-covered forest and the mirror-like surface of the lake. As an important conservation area, Laguna Chicabal protects both natural and cultural resources. Visitors are encouraged to respect local traditions, avoid swimming in the lake, and minimize environmental impact. The blend of natural beauty, ecological diversity, and indigenous cultural practices makes Laguna Chicabal a special destination for travelers interested in nature and heritage.
