Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Located in the highlands of Chiapas, Mexico, Lagunas de Montebello National Park protects a spectacular region characterized by over 50 stunning lakes of varying colors, ranging from turquoise and sapphire to emerald and violet. This unique coloration is due to the varying mineral content and depth of each lake, creating a breathtaking mosaic of natural beauty. The park spans roughly 6,600 acres (2,700 hectares) and features extensive pine-oak woodlands mixed with rich biodiversity including mammals such as ocelots, white-tailed deer, and a variety of bird species like the resplendent quetzal. The park rests within the Montes Azules Biosphere Reserve buffer zone, highlighting its ecological importance.

Historically, the area was inhabited by the Lacandon Maya and other indigenous peoples, adding archaeological significance with nearby ancient ruins. Visitors come to Lagunas de Montebello for hiking, kayaking on the pristine lakes, camping, and photography. The park presents an excellent opportunity for visitors to engage with nature in a peaceful setting while experiencing the cultural heritage of southeastern Mexico. Notable landmarks include the deep and vibrant Lake Montebello, Lake Tziscao, and the surrounding forest trails which showcase the region’s natural diversity.
