Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Lauca National Park, established in 1970, spans approximately 1,379 square miles in northern Chile, near the Bolivian border. The park is part of the Lauca Biosphere Reserve and is situated within the Andes mountains, featuring an altitude range from about 3,200 meters to over 6,000 meters. This diverse geography includes high plains, steppes, and significant bodies of water such as the Chungará Lake, one of the world's highest lakes. The park’s landscapes are dominated by the snow-capped peaks of the Parinacota and Pomerape volcanoes. Ecologically, it is home to over 130 bird species, including flamingos, Andean geese, and the endangered vicuña. Historically, the region has been inhabited by indigenous Aymara communities, contributing to its cultural richness. Recreation opportunities abound with hiking, wildlife observation, and photography being popular activities. Lauca’s unique high-altitude ecosystem and spectacular scenery attract numerous visitors drawn to its natural beauty and biodiversity.
