About Laurel Creek Conservation Area

Laurel Creek Conservation Area is a protected natural area offering diverse outdoor recreation with forested hills, a large reservoir, and abundant wildlife close to urban centers in northeastern Ohio.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Laurel Creek Conservation Area, located in Geauga County, Ohio, centers around the expansive 1,050-acre Laurel Creek Reservoir, which serves as a major drinking water source and recreational destination. The surrounding conservation land covers approximately 1,700 acres of mostly forested hills, rolling meadows, and wetlands. Established to protect the water quality and natural habitats, the area supports mixed hardwood forests dominated by oak, maple, and hickory species as well as pockets of wetlands that are important for migratory birds and native amphibians. Wildlife commonly spotted includes white-tailed deer, red foxes, numerous songbirds, and occasional sightings of river otters. The reservoir itself provides opportunities for fishing, kayaking, and small motor boating. An extensive network of trails totaling over six miles offers hiking and mountain biking options through scenic upland forests and around the lake. The area is particularly popular for birdwatching in spring and fall migration seasons. The conservation area also holds historical significance as part of Ohio’s early water management development, with the dam constructed in the mid-20th century. Visitors appreciate the well-maintained picnic areas, a small fishing pier, and the tranquil atmosphere that contrasts with its proximity to Cleveland and other metropolitan areas. Laurel Creek Conservation Area appeals to families, anglers, birders, and those seeking day-use outdoor activities in a protected natural environment near the city.
