Maungatautari Ecological Island Sanctuary protects over 3,400 hectares of native forest on the volcanic Maungatautari mountain, located in the Waikato region of New Zealand's North Island. Surrounded by a 47-kilometer-long predator-proof fence completed in 2006, the sanctuary creates a refuge for native birds, reptiles, and plants that are rare or extinct elsewhere.
