Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Miami County Park District manages and protects over 5,000 acres of parks, nature preserves, and recreational facilities across Miami County, Ohio. The district features a variety of habitats, including hardwood forests, wetlands, prairies, and waterways along the Great Miami River. These ecological zones support abundant wildlife such as white-tailed deer, various bird species, amphibians, and native plants, creating excellent conditions for naturalist activities and photography. Founded in 1974, the park district has developed multiple parks that offer trails suitable for hiking, mountain biking, fishing, and winter snowshoeing or cross-country skiing. Notable areas include Garbry Big Woods Preserve, which contains mature forest ecosystems, and Aullwood Audubon Center and Farm, a renowned education and conservation site focusing on local biodiversity and sustainable farming practices. Visitors come to enjoy picnic areas, fishing ponds, and boat launches, along with the seasonal interpretive programs and community events that the district sponsors. Its combination of managed green spaces and natural preserves provides accessible outdoor experiences for families, nature enthusiasts, and outdoor recreationists.
