Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Miesville Ravine Park Reserve, located in Dakota County, Minnesota, encompasses over 1,400 acres of river valley terrain, floodplain forests, oak savannas, and prairie remnants. The park’s landscape is shaped by the Cannon River, which carves through limestone bluffs and creates rugged ravines supporting diverse plant and animal species. Historically, the land was used for farming and milling but has since been restored into natural areas to protect native ecosystems and provide recreational opportunities. Visitors find more than 15 miles of trails for hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, and cross-country skiing. The park features well-maintained equestrian trails and several scenic overlooks above the river valley. Miesville Ravine is also a habitat for a variety of wildlife including white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, and numerous songbirds. Seasonal activities range from spring wildflower viewing to autumn leaf-peeping. The park is popular among bird watchers and anglers who fish in the Cannon River. With multiple trailheads and picnic areas, the reserve attracts families and outdoor enthusiasts looking for quiet natural experiences close to the Twin Cities metro area. Its blend of rugged ravines and open prairie offers habitat diversity unique in the region, while maintaining accessibility with nearby parking and facilities. Conservation efforts focus on invasive species control, prairie restoration, and maintaining water quality in the Cannon River corridor.
