About Mochima National Park

Mochima National Park is a stunning coastal and marine protected area in northeastern Venezuela, celebrated for its rich biodiversity, crystal-clear waters, and pristine beaches that offer exceptional outdoor recreation and wildlife viewing.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Established in 1973, Mochima National Park encompasses a diverse landscape of coastal mountains, islands, bays, and marine environments along the Caribbean Sea in northeastern Venezuela. Spanning parts of Sucre and Anzoátegui states, the park protects approximately 94,935 hectares of both terrestrial and marine habitats. The geography features rugged mountain ranges, white sandy beaches, coral reefs, and scattered islands, creating a mosaic of ecosystems that support a remarkable array of flora and fauna. The park is home to threatened species such as sea turtles (hawksbill and leatherback), manatees, and a rich diversity of marine fish and coral communities. The warm Caribbean currents facilitate thriving coral reefs, making snorkeling and diving some of the most popular pursuits in the park. Visitors can explore secluded beaches, kayak through turquoise bays, or take boat tours to nearby islands to enjoy birdwatching, fishing, and photography. Throughout the park, coastal fishing villages maintain traditional lifestyles, offering cultural insights and local hospitality. The combination of mountainous terrain, coastal scenery, and vibrant marine life draws ecotourists and adventure travelers alike. While the park lacks extensive formal hiking trails, its marine-rich waters and island landscapes are its primary allure. Mochima’s protection efforts focus on conserving marine biodiversity and balancing sustainable tourism with environmental preservation. It remains one of Venezuela’s most visited natural attractions, providing both immersion in tropical ecosystems and opportunities to experience Venezuelan culture along the coast.
