Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Mount Ai-Petri Protected Landscape is located in the Crimean Peninsula along the southern coast near the city of Yalta. Named after the Greek 'St. Peter', Ai-Petri is one of the most recognizable landmarks of Crimea, featuring jagged limestone peaks that reach an elevation of 1,234 meters (4,049 feet). The landscape is characterized by karst formations, cliffs, deep gorges, and caves, providing a unique geological setting. The area hosts rich biodiversity with a variety of endemic and rare plant species, such as Crimean pine, juniper, and rhododendrons, and is home to diverse wildlife including birds of prey, foxes, and small mammals.

Historically, Ai-Petri has cultural significance for the peoples of Crimea. Today, it is protected to conserve its natural and scenic values. Outdoor recreation is popular here, particularly hiking, with trails that offer spectacular views over the Black Sea and surrounding mountain ranges. A notable feature is the Ai-Petri cable car, one of the longest in Europe, which transports visitors toward the summit from the resort town of Miskhor, allowing easy access to high elevations and hiking routes.

Key visitor attractions include the panoramic viewpoints at the summit, dramatic cliff-edge walks, and exploration of the karst caves and grottos. The landscape’s mix of forested slopes and rugged peaks provides multiple microhabitats for a wide array of plant and animal species. The protected area appeals to nature lovers, photographers, and outdoor enthusiasts seeking striking scenery and a combination of natural beauty and cultural resonance.
