About Mt. Parker Range

Mt. Parker Range is a lush, volcanic mountain range on the island of Maui, Hawaii, known for its rich biodiversity and unique tropical ecosystems. It offers exceptional opportunities for hiking, birdwatching, and experiencing native Hawaiian flora and fauna.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

The Mt. Parker Range is a volcanic mountain chain located on the eastern flank of the island of Maui, part of the Hawaiian archipelago. The range rises from sea level to approximately 5,200 feet elevation, featuring steep, heavily forested slopes dominated by native ʻōhiʻa lehua (Metrosideros polymorpha) and koa (Acacia koa) trees. The range is an important watershed for the island, supporting several streams and contributing to the health of downstream ecosystems. Ecologically, the Mt. Parker Range supports a diverse ecosystem home to many endemic and endangered species such as the Hawaiian honeycreepers and native Hawaiian tree snails. Historically, the area was significant to Native Hawaiians as a source of fresh water and native plants and has retained intact native forest compared to lower elevation areas affected by invasive species. Hiking in the Mt. Parker Range offers visitors a chance to experience remote, quiet tropical forest landscapes with a mix of moderate to strenuous trails leading to ridgelines and lookout points providing sweeping views over Maui’s windward coast. The range is also valued for bird watchers and naturalists due to its richness in native species. Despite its ecological importance, access is limited and mostly private or requires permission from landowners, helping to preserve its pristine condition. The Mt. Parker Range’s blend of natural, cultural, and scenic qualities makes it an outstanding area for those seeking an immersive Hawaiian nature experience beyond the more developed parklands.
