Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Mukkurthi National Park is located in the Western Ghats in southwestern India, within the state of Tamil Nadu. The park spans a diverse terrain characterized by rolling grassland interspersed with sholas, which are patches of evergreen forest unique to this region. It plays a crucial role in the conservation of the Nilgiri tahr (a mountain goat) and is part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Established in 2001, Mukkurthi's elevation ranges from 2400 to 2550 meters, creating a cool, misty environment that supports a wide variety of flora and fauna. The park's history dates back to the British colonial era when it was used as hunting grounds. Visitors today can enjoy peaceful hiking, engage in bird watching, and explore the unique flora of the region. The Mukkurthi Peak and the Silent Valley are notable landmarks within the park, attracting nature enthusiasts and trekkers alike.
