About Mulligans Flat Woodland Sanctuary

Mulligans Flat Woodland Sanctuary is a protected wildlife reserve in the Australian Capital Territory offering visitors a chance to experience one of the region’s last remnant yellow box–red gum woodlands with abundant native flora and fauna.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Mulligans Flat Woodland Sanctuary protects approximately 1150 hectares of native woodland in northern Canberra, within the Australian Capital Territory. The sanctuary is managed to conserve one of the most intact remnants of critically endangered yellow box–red gum grassy woodlands, an ecosystem important for its biodiversity and cultural significance. The area features open woodlands dominated by yellow box and Blakely’s red gum trees, with a diverse understory of native grasses and wildflowers. The sanctuary is a sanctuary for numerous native wildlife species, including eastern bettongs, golden sun moths, southern brown bandicoots, and various birds such as the hooded robin and painted honeyeater. Ecological restoration and rewilding projects are ongoing here, including reintroductions of locally extinct mammals and habitat restoration efforts. Visitors can enjoy a network of walking trails that provide excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing, birdwatching, and photography. The habitat supports important nocturnal species, and guided night walks are available at times. The sanctuary also serves educational purposes, with a focus on Aboriginal cultural heritage, conservation science, and community engagement. Facilities include a visitors’ center, boardwalks over wetlands, and interpretive signage outlining the ecology and history of the woodland. Its proximity to Canberra makes it a popular destination for day visitors and outdoor enthusiasts seeking nature immersion close to the city. Mulligans Flat Woodland Sanctuary stands out as an important refuge for native species and a vibrant example of ecological recovery within an urban context.
