About Muskwa-Kechika Management Area

The Muskwa-Kechika Management Area is a vast wilderness region in northern British Columbia offering unparalleled opportunities for remote wildlife viewing, backcountry exploration, and experiencing pristine boreal forests and rugged mountain landscapes.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Established in 1998, the Muskwa-Kechika Management Area (M-KMA) covers over 6.4 million acres of wilderness in northern British Columbia. It is one of the largest intact wilderness areas in North America, combining diverse ecosystems including boreal forests, alpine tundra, wetlands, and significant river corridors. The region encompasses multiple mountain ranges, such as the Muskwa and Hart Ranges, creating dramatic geological features including rugged peaks and deep valleys. The area supports a rich variety of wildlife, including large populations of caribou, moose, stone sheep, mountain goats, grizzly bears, wolves, and a significant number of bird species. Conservation has been prioritized here with a unique resource management approach that balances ecological protection with sustainable resource development. Recreational opportunities focus on remote wilderness experiences such as hiking, horseback riding, backcountry camping, hunting, fishing, and wildlife photography. Due to its vastness and limited road access, visitors generally reach the area by floatplane, helicopter, or multiple days of travel on remote roads. The M-KMA provides a rare chance to explore largely unspoiled environments, featuring intact predator-prey ecosystems and substantial habitats for species seldom observed elsewhere. The area contains no formal visitor centers or developed facilities, maintaining its wild character and appeal for experienced adventurers seeking solitude. Seasonal conditions vary widely with cold winters, short summers, and unpredictable weather requiring careful preparation. Despite its remoteness, the management area's comprehensive planning and stakeholder cooperation allow public access while protecting this crucial ecological stronghold.
