About Nature Park of Faial

The Nature Park of Faial encompasses the rich volcanic landscapes and diverse ecosystems of Faial Island in the Azores, offering pristine hiking trails, whale watching, and unique geological formations.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

The Nature Park of Faial protects nearly the entire island of Faial, one of the central islands in the Azores archipelago. Covering varied volcanic landscapes, the park showcases the island’s iconic caldera, volcanic cones, lava flows, and lush laurel forests, providing an extraordinary example of Atlantic island ecology. Its centerpiece is the Caldeira do Faial, a 2.5 km wide volcanic crater surrounded by steep walls that offers panoramic views of the island and surrounding ocean. The park also includes the Capelinhos Volcano, site of the 1957-58 volcanic eruption that significantly altered Faial’s western coastline and is now a geological monument with an interpretive visitor center. The park’s ecosystems support a variety of endemic plants and provide crucial nesting habitats for seabirds such as Cory’s Shearwater. Recreational opportunities include hiking, bird watching, whale and dolphin tours, scuba diving, and visiting geological sites. Trails range from easy walks through hydrangea-lined roads and laurel forests to more challenging climbs up volcanic ridges. The Nature Park balances conservation with sustainable tourism, inviting visitors to experience Faial’s unique natural heritage while promoting environmental education. The island’s mild, maritime climate allows year-round outdoor exploration, with spring and summer favored for wildflower blooms and marine fauna sightings. Visitors are drawn by the park’s fusion of dramatic volcanic scenery, biodiversity, and cultural history, including charming towns like Horta, known for its vibrant marina welcoming Atlantic sailors.
