Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Nokrek National Park, located in the West Garo Hills district of Meghalaya, India, spans the Nokrek Biosphere Reserve and covers a diverse landscape of tropical and subtropical forests. The park is situated on the Nokrek Peak in the Garo Hills, rising to an elevation of about 1,412 meters (4,633 ft). Its rugged terrain and dense evergreen forests serve as critical habitats for a variety of flora and fauna, including many endemic and endangered species like the red panda, Asian elephant, and hornbills. Nokrek is also famous for the wild citrus species Citrus indica, which is native to this region.

Declared a national park in 1986 and later designated as a Biosphere Reserve in 2009, Nokrek plays an essential role in conservation efforts by preserving one of the last remaining pockets of lowland and hill evergreen forest in the region. Visitors can explore the park through guided treks that traverse dense forest trails offering birdwatching, wildlife viewing, and opportunities to experience tribal culture in nearby villages.
