Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Owabi Wildlife Sanctuary, located in the Ashanti Region of Ghana, is an important ecological preserve that provides refuge to numerous flora and fauna. Spanning over 13 square kilometers, the sanctuary is centered around the Owabi Dam, which supplies water to the nearby Kumasi region. Established in 1971, the sanctuary is home to an array of species, including more than 140 bird species, making it a paradise for ornithologists. The lush forest, interspersed with grassland and wetland habitats, supports rich biodiversity. Apart from its ecological appeal, the sanctuary is historically significant as the dam was constructed as far back as 1928. Key recreational opportunities include guided nature walks and birdwatching tours, attracting both local and international visitors. With its commitment to conservation and education, Owabi Wildlife Sanctuary remains a vital part of the region's natural and cultural heritage.
