About Páramo de Ocetá Protected Area

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Located in the eastern range of the Colombian Andes within the Boyacá Department, Páramo de Ocetá is regarded as one of the most beautiful and ecologically important páramo ecosystems globally. Spanning elevations roughly from 2,900 to over 3,800 meters (9,500 to 12,500 feet), it features rolling tussock grasslands, frailejones (Espeletia), peat bogs, mountain streams, and small lagoons. The páramo acts as an essential water catchment, feeding major rivers that supply local communities. The region is celebrated for its spectacular landscapes, including expansive moorlands, rocky outcrops, and panoramic views of the surrounding Andean mountains. The area's unique flora includes hundreds of endemic plant species adapted to cold, humid conditions above the tree line, while fauna includes spectacled bears, Andean tapirs, and diverse bird species such as the paramo tapaculo. Historically, indigenous Muisca people revered the páramo and used it for spiritual ceremonies and traditional agriculture in adjacent lower slopes. Today, Páramo de Ocetá is a popular destination for ecotourism and adventure travel, with hiking trails that traverse fragile ecosystems and lead to natural landmarks such as the Alto de la Cuera and Boquerón valley. Trekking through the páramo provides visitors a chance to experience surreal landscapes, abundant biodiversity, and cultural heritage. Because of its ecological sensitivity, visitors are encouraged to practice sustainable tourism and respect conservation guidelines. The area’s awe-inspiring combination of natural beauty, ecological significance, and outdoor adventure makes Páramo de Ocetá a prized destination for nature lovers and responsible adventurers in Colombia.
